Enclosures top and bottom suffered hydrogen damage due to excessive temperature and high partial pressure. Approximate partial pressure of hydrogen in this vessel was 1500 psi and skin temperature on the outside surface was 350-600°F. At the top of the vessel, the maximum temperature was 600-700°F. The analysis revealed the damage and degradation was due to hydrogen diffusion and internal fissuring at microstructure constituents within the steel forging.
My recommendation was to replace the forgings with a 3 chrome 1 molybdenum type of steel consistent with SA-182 F22 material - Valley Nitrogen Producers
